Learning, Connecting and Investing for Sustainable Development

Knowledge, collaboration, and investment are key drivers of sustainable community development.

Representatives from Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM), together with members of community-based microfinance groups, had the opportunity to participate in the Nanenane Farmers’ Day celebrations in Arusha. The event brought together farmers, entrepreneurs, community members, development actors, and other stakeholders to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and explore opportunities for improving livelihoods.

During the celebrations, participants had the opportunity to learn more about modern agricultural practices, livestock keeping, entrepreneurship, value addition, and various economic opportunities that can contribute to increased household income and improved living standards. The event also provided a valuable platform for participants to interact with different stakeholders, exchange experiences, discover new ideas, and gain practical knowledge that can be applied within their communities.

For members of microfinance groups, such opportunities are particularly important as they help broaden their understanding of available economic activities and encourage them to explore ways of investing their savings and resources in productive and sustainable ventures. Access to information, skills, networks, and markets can play a significant role in enabling individuals and groups to strengthen their businesses and become more economically resilient.

For Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM), participation in Nanenane is part of the broader commitment to supporting communities to become economically empowered, self-reliant, and resilient. Strengthening Community-Based Economic Empowerment

The fight against poverty is not the responsibility of one person it is a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of the entire community. When we work together, the journey towards economic empowerment becomes easier, stronger, and more sustainable.

During a visit to Duga Ward, the Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM) team had the opportunity to meet with members of community-based microfinance groups. The team listened to the challenges they face, exchanged ideas, and discussed practical ways to strengthen these groups so they can continue to grow and create greater economic opportunities for their members.

We believe that strong and resilient microfinance groups play an important role in building self-reliant communities, reducing poverty, strengthening social cohesion and peace, and promoting sustainable development.

Through collective action, knowledge sharing, and community empowerment, we can create greater opportunities for individuals and families to build more secure and prosperous futures.

Empowering Young Mothers to Challenge Gender Norms and Promote Equality

A NOREC officer leads a discussion with a group of young mothers on how society’s perceptions of masculinity and femininity are shaped from childhood, and how these perceptions can influence children’s lives as they grow into adulthood.

The training focused on understanding how parenting practices, cultural norms, traditions, and societal expectations can either contribute to or prevent gender-based violence. Participants explored the importance of raising children in environments that promote equality, respect, positive communication, and equal opportunities regardless of gender.

Through the discussion, young mothers were encouraged to become agents of change within their families and communities by promoting parenting approaches that challenge harmful and discriminatory gender norms. They were also encouraged to nurture a generation that values dignity, rights, respect, and equality for all.

We believe that investing in the knowledge and awareness of today’s parents and caregivers is an important step towards building safer, more inclusive, and gender-equal communities for the children of tomorrow.

Leo, Taasisi ya Youth Peacemakers (YPM) ilitembelea Kituo cha Polisi Wilaya ya Lushoto kuimarisha ushirikiano katika mapambano dhidi ya ukatili wa kijinsia kupitia Dawati la Jinsia na Watoto. Katika ziara hiyo, YPM ilikabidhi kompyuta itakayosaidia kuhifadhi taarifa za kesi za ukatili wa kijinsia dhidi ya wanawake na watoto, ikiwa ni hatua ya kuimarisha utoaji wa huduma kwa waathirika. 

Mkuu wa Kitengo cha Upelelezi Wilaya ya Lushoto, Afande Melkioli Fundi, aliishukuru YPM kwa mchango huo na kusisitiza umuhimu wa kuendelea kushirikiana ili kutokomeza ukatili wa kijinsia katika jamii. Naye Programs Officer wa Mazingira na Michezo wa YPM, Bw. Kamote Francis, alieleza kuwa YPM itaendelea kushirikiana na Jeshi la Polisi na wadau wengine katika kujenga jamii salama, yenye usawa na isiyo na ukatili.

TOGETHER, WE CAN END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Today, Youth Peacemakers (YPM) visited the Lushoto District Police Station to strengthen collaboration in the fight against gender-based violence through the Gender and Children’s Desk.During the visit, YPM donated a computer to support the safe recording and management of gender-based violence cases involving women and children, helping to improve services for survivors.

The Officer Commander  of the Criminal Investigation Department (OC-CID) in Lushoto District, Melkioli Fundi, expressed his appreciation to YPM for the valuable contribution and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in eliminating gender-based violence within the community.Speaking on behalf of YPM,Programs Officer, Mr. Kamote Francis, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working closely with the Tanzania Police Force and other stakeholders to build a safer, more inclusive, and violence-free society.

YPM FC Shines at the East Africa Cup with Tournament Success and Youth Capacity Building

YPM proudly participated in the East Africa Cup, a regional platform that brings together young people from across East Africa Countries (Tanzania and Kenya) through sports, leadership, and learning.
This year’s tournament provided an opportunity not only to compete on the field but also to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and leadership capacity of young people through a series of educational seminars.

One of YPM’s greatest achievements during the tournament was the outstanding performance of its Under-16 Boys Football Team, which secured second place after an impressive campaign.
Throughout the competition, the team demonstrated exceptional teamwork, discipline, determination, and sportsmanship, proudly representing both YPM and Tanzania on the regional stage. Their achievement reflects YPM’s continued commitment to nurturing young talent through sports while promoting values of resilience, respect, and fair play.
Beyond the football pitch, YPM played an active role in delivering educational sessions that complemented the tournament’s focus on holistic youth development.
The organization facilitated three key seminars covering mental health, leadership development, and sports first aid, equipping participants with practical knowledge that extends beyond competition.
The Mental Health Seminar åencouraged young athletes to recognize the importance of psychological well-being, build resilience, manage stress, and seek support when facing mental health challenges.
During the Leadership Seminar, participants explored the qualities of effective leaders, including communication, teamwork, accountability, integrity, and positive decision-making.

Young people were encouraged to become role models within their teams, schools, and communities by demonstrating leadership both on and off the field.
The Sports First Aid Seminar provided practical skills for responding to common sports-related injuries. Participants learned basic first aid techniques, injury prevention measures, and the importance of timely and appropriate responses during sporting activities, helping to promote safer participation in sports.
YPM was represented by three facilitators from the organization who led these learning sessions, bringing expertise and experience in youth development, mental health, and sports education.
In addition, three YPM personnel served as members of the East Africa Cup Media Team, supporting tournament communications through photography, videography, storytelling, and media coverage. Their contribution helped document the event’s impact and amplify the voices and achievements of young participants across the region.

YPM Marks the Day of the African Child by Visiting Irente School for the Blind

In commemoration of the Day of the African Child, Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM) spent the day with students at Irente School for the Blind in Lushoto District. The celebration aimed to promote children’s rights, inclusion, and the importance of ensuring that every child has access to essential services for their growth and development.

Through a variety of interactive games and activities, YPM educated students about the 2026 Day of the African Childtheme, which calls for universal access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services for every child in Africa. The games provided a child-friendly approach to teaching the importance of handwashing, maintaining a clean environment, using safe sanitation facilities, and adopting healthy hygiene practices to support children’s well-being.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Mshana, a teacher at Irente School for the Blind, explained that the school was established in 1968 to provide education for girls with visual impairments. In 1979, it expanded to enroll both boys and girls, and in 2018, the school officially adopted an inclusive education model, bringing together students with visual impairments and those without disabilities in the same learning environment.

The school operates as a boarding school for students with visual impairments and as a day school for sighted students, with a total enrollment of 110 students. It follows the standard Tanzanian primary school curriculum, which is taught in Kiswahili. Thanks to the dedication of its teachers and school leadership, Irente School for the Blind has consistently achieved outstanding academic results and is recognized as the top-performing school for learners with visual impairments in Lushoto District.

Mr. Mshana also noted that the school intentionally admits a small number of sighted students to strengthen inclusive education and encourage learning together. In mixed classrooms, students who are blind, those with low vision, and sighted students study side by side in balanced class sizes, ensuring that every child receives the attention and support they need to thrive.

YPM and Koteti College Mark Men’s Mental Health Day Through Education and Sports

Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM), in partnership with Koteti College, successfully organized a special mental health workshop alongside sporting activities to commemorate Men’s Mental Health Day. A total of 69 young peopleparticipated in the event, where they received education on mental health, the importance of recognizing mental health challenges, practical coping strategies, and the value of seeking professional and social support when needed.

Following the workshop, participants took part in a series of sports activities designed to promote both physical and mental well-being. In the women’s basketball match, Ladies of Town Dwellers emerged victorious with a score of 28–9against Bushmen Ladies. In the men’s basketball match, Bushmen secured a 69–65 victory over Town Dwellers.

The celebration also featured a football match in which YPM FC defeated Koteti FC by 2–1 in an exciting game that attracted enthusiastic participation from students and supporters.

The event demonstrated how sports can serve as a powerful tool for promoting mental well-being among men and young people. Regular participation in sports helps reduce stress, boosts self-confidence, strengthens social connections, and provides a safe space for young people to express themselves and build supportive relationships. It also helps reduce feelings of isolation and fosters a sense of belonging within a caring community.

By combining mental health education with sports, YPM and Koteti College encouraged young men to recognize that mental health is an essential part of overall well-being. The event reinforced the message that speaking openly about mental health challenges is not a sign of weakness but an important step toward seeking support and leading a healthier, more productive life.

The commemoration also contributed to breaking the silence surrounding men’s mental health while encouraging communities to create environments that promote open conversations, social support, and the well-being of all.

MAADHIMISHO YA SIKU YA MAZINGIRA DUNIANI LUSHOTO YAIBUA WITO WA TANZANIA YA KIJANI IFIKAPO 2050

Maadhimisho ya Siku ya Mazingira Duniani yaliyofanyika katika eneo la Manolo, Wilaya ya Lushoto, yamebeba ujumbe mzito wa kuwajibika katika uhifadhi wa mazingira kupitia kaulimbiu isemayo “Dira 2050: Tuwajibike Kukijanisha Tanzania.”

Mgeni rasmi katika maadhimisho hayo alikuwa Mkuu wa Wilaya ya Lushoto aliyewakilishwa na Mkurugenzi Mtendaji wa Halmashauri ya Wilaya ya Lushoto, Bi. Ikupa Mwasyoge. Maadhimisho hayo yaliwakutanisha wanafunzi kutoka Shule za Sekondari Nywelo na Shume, vikundi vya afya na mazingira, wananchi, wadau wa mazingira pamoja na viongozi mbalimbali wa Serikali za mitaa.

Kwa kipindi cha tarehe 2 hadi 5 Juni, shughuli mbalimbali zilifanyika ikiwa ni sehemu ya Wiki ya Mazingira. Tarehe 3 Juni wananchi walishiriki zoezi la usafi katika maeneo ya Maguzoni na Halmashauri, huku tarehe 4 Juni elimu kuhusu uhifadhi wa mazingira na matumizi ya nishati safi ikitolewa kwa wananchi na washiriki mbalimbali.

Kilele cha maadhimisho kilifanyika tarehe 5 Juni ambapo shughuli mbalimbali zilifanyika ikiwemo gwaride, igizo lenye ujumbe wa utunzaji wa mazingira, upandaji wa miti, usomaji wa risala pamoja na hotuba kutoka kwa viongozi mbalimbali.

Akizungumza katika maadhimisho hayo, Bi. Ikupa Mwasyoge alipongeza juhudi zinazofanywa na Halmashauri, vikundi vya mazingira, wadau pamoja na wananchi katika kuhamasisha utunzaji wa mazingira na matumizi ya nishati safi.

“Jukumu la kutunza mazingira ni la kila mwananchi. Ni muhimu kuendelea kuzingatia kauli mbiu ya ‘Kata mti, panda mti’ ili kuhakikisha tunalinda mazingira yetu kwa kizazi cha sasa na kijacho,” alisema Bi. Ikupa.

Aidha, aliwataka wakulima na wafugaji kulinda vyanzo vya maji kwa kuepuka shughuli zinazoweza kuharibu mazingira, huku akisisitiza kuwa kila Halmashauri inapaswa kuhakikisha inapanda miti milioni 1.5 kama sehemu ya juhudi za kitaifa za uhifadhi wa mazingira.

YPM na iTF Waadhimisha Siku ya Hedhi Duniani kwa Kuwakutanisha Wanafunzi wa Lushoto

Katika kuadhimisha Siku ya Hedhi Duniani, Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM) kwa kushirikiana na Improving Tanzania Foundation (iTF) wameandaa maadhimisho maalum yaliyowakutanisha wanafunzi kutoka shule mbalimbali za Wilaya ya Lushoto. Shule zilizoshiriki ni pamoja na Shambalai, Prince Claus, Lushoto, Kwembago, Gologolo, Shekilindi, Ubiri, Ngulwi na Kitala.

Mgeni rasmi katika maadhimisho hayo alikuwa Mwalimu Rashid Mswaki aliyemwakilisha Mkurugenzi wa Halmashauri ya Wilaya ya Lushoto. Katika hotuba yake, alisisitiza umuhimu wa kuhakikisha vijana wanapata elimu sahihi kuhusu hedhi salama ili kuondoa unyanyapaa na dhana potofu zinazowakwamisha wasichana wengi kufikia ndoto zao.

“Hedhi si jambo la aibu bali ni sehemu ya maisha ya kila mwanamke na msichana. Elimu sahihi ndiyo njia ya kujenga jamii yenye uelewa na usawa,” alisema Mwalimu Rashid Mswaki.

Aidha, Inspekta Karim Celestine, Afisa wa Dawati la Jinsia Lushoto, alizungumzia masuala ya ukatili wa kijinsia kwa kuyaunganisha na changamoto zinazowakabili wasichana kipindi cha hedhi. Alisisitiza umuhimu wa jamii kushirikiana kulinda haki na usalama wa watoto wa kike shuleni na nyumbani.

Kwa upande wake, Madam Grace kutoka iTF alitoa elimu kuhusu matumizi sahihi ya pedi za kufua, namna ya kuzitumia kwa usalama pamoja na aina mbalimbali za pads zinazopatikana kwa matumizi ya wasichana.

Maadhimisho hayo yalitoa pia nafasi kwa wanafunzi kushiriki katika mjadala wa panel uliowakutanisha wawakilishi kutoka kila shule pamoja na mwanafunzi mmoja wa kiume. Kupitia mjadala huo, wanafunzi walizungumzia dhana potofu kuhusu hedhi na kusisitiza kuwa elimu ya hedhi si kwa wasichana pekee bali ni haki ya wavulana kujifunza pia ili kujenga jamii yenye uelewa, heshima na ushirikiano.

“Hedhi ni jambo la kawaida, hivyo wavulana pia wanapaswa kuelimishwa ili wawe sehemu ya kuondoa unyanyapaa na kuwapa wasichana mazingira salama na yenye kuelewana,” alisema mmoja wa washiriki wa panel.

Maadhimisho hayo yameendelea kuonyesha umuhimu wa ushirikishwaji wa vijana katika kujenga jamii yenye uelewa wa afya ya hedhi, usawa wa kijinsia na haki za mtoto wa kike. Kupitia ushirikiano kati ya YPM na iTF, vijana wameendelea kupata nafasi ya kujifunza, kushiriki na kuwa mabalozi wa mabadiliko chanya katika jamii zao.
