SUCCESS STORIES ON ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM : Written by Irene Raymond Mchau Programs Officer for Environment & Advocacy

The environment program done by Youth Peace Makers Tanzania in various ways aim to lobby and mobilize people on the aspect of environmental preservation and protection to help the society. The program is implemented through forming groups in Secondary and Primary Schools and also through the advocacy on policy change.
Youth Peace Makers has more than 25 Clubs in Lushoto District, Mkinga District and Handeni District. We conduct training on protection of their environment through planting trees around the schools and homes and distribute seeds for the clubs to make tree nursery in their schools. Whereby now they are able to plant trees around the schools’ environment and some of trees are distributed to students to plant them in their home. School environmental teachers who are working voluntary with the organization are making follow up of trees distributed to students but also the organization in 2017 during the environmental day we distributed 1,500,000 trees in secondary and Primary schools.
The organization conducted Breakfast meeting, that is, the meeting involving the duty bearer and right holder. In one of these meetings the discussion was about environmental destruction and the by-laws that are to be adhered in Lushoto. The speakers were from one organization that is also dealing with environment and the Environment Executive officer in Lushoto and other stakeholders from small businesses and the representatives of Non-Governmental organizations.
After the meeting the task force was formed to make the follow-up on the resolutions made in that meeting. One of the big issues was the construction of the market where perviously people were putting goods on the ground that was dangerous to the people’s health, now the market is built and most of people in Lushoto and all areas around Lushoto who are using the same market to buy and sell goods are in good condition. Also the task force makes follow-up on the implementation of Lushoto by-laws on the environment to ensure that they are strictly followed in order to make sure that the environment around Lushoto and other places around Lushoto are clean. Therefore through the public performance and peaceful demonstrations the society/community was educated to adhere to the laws on environment. Now there is great change on the environment in Lushoto District.

It is very good to see that the YPM is reaching people in rural areas such as masai and establishing VICOBA project that enables them to run their families. These are the words of EIRIC MUBARAK from Norway at Sunnfjord school after having the opportunity for the teacher and other student to visit the group not available VICOBA for the masai

On 10th Feb Sunnfjord group had a chance to visit VICOBA in Maasai village with YPM host Vicent who coordinate our Programs in Korogwe district. The Maasai VICOBA members welcomed guests with performance of cultural songs and then had the opportunity to explain on the operation of the VICOBA project and the challenges they had. The Visitors were very impressed on the extended work by YPM to the point of reaching even those in the remote areas in the plateau of Usambara mountains. The guests also had the opportunity to see the joy and trouble of driving in the rough roads as they had to spend some times cleaning the path for their bus to pass through so as to reach the intended village. That shared with them the now and then challenge faced by YPM in reaching the intended people so as to shed the light of hope to such communities.
The group in the Maasai land reported that they are benefiting from the loans that enable them to raise their livestock which are the main activities of the Maasai people. Since the establishment of their group so far they have invested shares of more than two million shillings where one share is two thousand shillings and a social fund only five hundred shillings.
After learning about the group they were fortunate to visit the Maasai ceremony on the rite of passage; that is the passage of young people from childhood to youthful and adulthood. It is the ceremony that declare them ready to assume further responsibilities in their communities. They played traditional songs as well as jumping from as part of the joy and celebrating their traditions.
The purpose of this trip to our visitors is to learn cultures and to live with Tanzanians but through a visit to the Maasai, they have given a new image and understanding of the vast but well celebrated culture in our Tanzanian contexts.

Through the VICOBA project many young people self-employed and run their families have been seen in a visit to Sunnfjord students in the village of Msongolo

Sunnfjord Folkhoghskole is the school in Forde that is accommodating a number of youths all over Norway for the One year program in Development Issues, Sports and Talent Development. One of the line is the Youth Peacemakers Movement. Among the year plans is to visit the partners and see the support to Development in their local communities.
On January 16 2018, YPM received a group of 11 students and one leader from Norway Sunnfjord FHS who came to Tanzania with a view of exchange and sharing on culture, Tourism and support to Development projects under YPM.
After arriving these visitors had the opportunity to relax in Dar es Salaam and on 18 they arrived in Lushoto. After reaching Lushoto they had the opportunity to visit the Irente Institutions where they get to see the charity work done by the ELCT-NED through the Blind school and Children’s Home (Orphanage).
In addition the visitors did hiking to Mkuzi waterfalls and ride the bicycles to and from Mkuzi. On 01st. February they had the opportunity to visit VICOBA groups at the Msongolo Village in Bumbuli Council where they learned how the community benefited from this project through saving money and taking loans. They also visited the members’ projects and were more delighted to see the 24-year-old young man Stephen Richard’s house. His house which is the outcome of his investment and loans from VICOBA has four bedrooms, a storeroom and a sitting room; he is still continuing with the construction. Afterwards the team visited a field of tomatoes that is also the product of VICOBA member.
For Tanzanians, employment is a major challenge but through this project we see how young people are self-employed and act as a model for some young people to stop complaining about the needy and instead to start fighting poverty by joining existing

YPM under the Environment and Advocacy program prepared the environment competition debate.

The competition involves Secondary students from O-level and A-level Schools around the Lushoto District.
On 13th May 2017 O- level students started their competition and we look forward to start the competition for A-level students early July. On this first round it involved 10 schools and they were divided into two groups. Motion for first group was “Can environment protection lead to eradication of poverty?”.
The second motion was “Is there sufficient involvement of youth on environment in Tanzania?” . The model used was PDF. After this round we remain with 5 schools and the second round will be early July after the school vocation. The program intends to raise awareness and thus contribute towards the S2C on SDG goals no. 1, 4, 13, 15 and 17.
