Mental Health Matters: Strong Minds, Stronger Communities
Lushoto, Tanzania | Youth Mental Health Education Session
Youth Peacemakers Tanzania (YPM) brought together young people from Shambalai Secondary School and the YPM Football Team for a mental health education session held at the YPM Ground. The session aimed to raise awareness of mental health, encourage open conversations, and equip young people with practical knowledge to support their well-being and that of others.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Juma I. Kimungu, who guided participants in understanding mental health, its importance, and the role it plays in their daily lives.
Understanding Mental Health and Its Importance
Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and behave, how we manage stress, relate to others, make decisions, and respond to everyday challenges.
The discussion emphasized that mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness. Everyone has mental health, and it can change throughout different stages of life. Like physical health, mental well-being deserves attention, care, and support.

Young people may experience stress arising from academic expectations, relationships, family responsibilities, financial difficulties, social pressure, bullying, violence, and uncertainty about the future. Understanding these challenges is an important step toward recognizing when support is needed and knowing where to seek help.
Encouraging Positive Mental Health Practices Among Young People
During the session, participants were encouraged to adopt practical approaches to maintaining their mental well-being and supporting their peers. These included:
- Speaking openly: Expressing feelings, concerns, and challenges to trusted people.
- Supporting one another: Recognizing when friends may be struggling and offering understanding and encouragement.
- Managing stress positively: Developing healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions and everyday pressures.
- Using sports and physical activities: Engaging in exercise, football, and teamwork to promote well-being and social connection.
- Listening without judgment: Creating safe and supportive spaces where young people feel comfortable sharing their experiences.
- Seeking help when needed: Reaching out to trusted adults, counsellors, healthcare professionals, or other qualified support providers when challenges become difficult to manage alone.

These messages reinforced the importance of building a culture in which mental health is discussed openly and seeking support is recognized as a positive step rather than a sign of weakness.
The Role of Sports in Promoting Mental Well-Being
For Youth Peacemakers Tanzania, sports are more than competition. They provide opportunities for young people to develop confidence, build friendships, strengthen teamwork, and cultivate resilience and a sense of belonging.
Through football and other sports-based activities, YPM creates opportunities to engage young people in conversations about issues affecting their lives, including mental health, peaceful coexistence, and personal development.
Bringing together students from Shambalai Secondary School and members of the YPM Football Team also highlighted the value of connecting education, sports, and community engagement to promote the holistic development of young people.
Building Strong Minds and Stronger Communities
The mental health education session reaffirmed that healthy communities need both healthy bodies and healthy minds. By equipping young people with knowledge, encouraging supportive relationships, and creating safe spaces for dialogue, communities can help young people navigate challenges and support one another more effectively.
Youth Peacemakers Tanzania remains committed to empowering young people through education, sports, and community-based initiatives that promote well-being, inclusion, and positive social change.
Mental health matters. Strong minds build stronger communities. Together, we can create a generation that understands mental health, supports one another, and knows that no one has to face life’s challenges alone.
